10/19/2004 12:00:00 AM - US LABS Names Prominent Industry Expert James Thompson, M.D., Ph.D. To Senior Medical Director Position
IRVINE, Calif., October 19, 2004 – US LABS, the nation’s fastest-growing cancer diagnostic laboratory, appointed James Thompson, M.D., Ph.D. to the position of senior medical director. Dr. Thompson brings extensive pathology and commercial laboratory experience and is responsible for the clinical operations of the cancer diagnostic lab as well as managing the diverse staff of pathologists and medical professionals at US LABS. In addition, as a member of the senior management team, Dr. Thompson is the principal medical liaison to all departments in the organization and will assist in the development of profitable growth strategies, while serving as the company’s medical conscience to ensure optimal patient care.
US LABS provides cancer diagnostic and prognostic laboratory testing services to a nationwide network of pathologists and clinicians through community-based hospitals and clinician offices. Specimens typically include tissue, bone marrow, blood or urine and key testing methodologies include immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cytogenetics and molecular-based technologies, such as hybrid capture and gene expression profiling.
Dr. Thompson continues to serve as chief executive officer and medical director for Pathogenesys, which conducts pathology testing to help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies develop and test cancer drugs and treatments. Prior to that, as vice president and medical director for Oncotech, Inc., which conducts molecular oncology testing services, his responsibilities included the direction of CLIA-certified oncology testing services, FDA Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) contract research services and research pathology. Dr. Thompson also held various positions at Impath, a commercial pathology lab, ranging from director of biopharmaceutical service to vice president of technology and medical director of Impath’s Predictive Oncology in Los Angeles.
“We’re pleased to welcome Dr. Thompson to our senior management team. He brings a tremendous amount of clinical and medical expertise and commercial reference lab experience to our pathology and medical staff,” said Judd Jessup, president and chief executive officer, US LABS. “Dr. Thompson provides a tremendous upgrade in our consultative approach to our network of physician clients. His broad background in hematopathology, breast pathology and molecular pathology gives US LABS the breadth of clinical leadership it needs as we expand all aspects of our cancer diagnostic offerings.”
“I’ve been very impressed with the focus US LABS places on building partnerships with pathologists across the country with the VirtualPath LabTM product line that uses innovative web-based technology to bring sophisticated laboratory testing services closer to the local physician,” said Dr. James Thompson, senior medical director, US LABS.
Through one of the VirtualPath Lab products, Virtual ImageTM, US LABS provides a slide of the tissue sample and powerful 20X microscope capabilities via the web – the tools that community-based pathologists need to conduct the professional clinical diagnosis and prognosis themselves from any computer anywhere in the world. Continued Thompson, “The Virtual product line demonstrates US LABS’ commitment to helping pathologists serve their patients and build their practices, rather than lose these prognostic services to large national laboratories, and I’m pleased to be able to help US LABS further this mission.”
Dr. Thompson received his medical degree and doctorate from the University of California, Irvine. He completed residency in anatomic pathology and a fellowship in molecular pathology from Stanford University. He also completed a fellowship in hematopathology at the University of California, Irvine under the direction of Dr. Michael Samoszuk and Dr. James Baker.
