US LABS in the News

3/17/2005 12:00:00 AM - World Expert in Flow Cytometry Joins US LABS

Irvine, Calif., March 17, 2005 — US LABS, one of the nation’s leading cancer reference laboratories, today announced the appointment of Dr. Bruce H. Davis to the position of Director of Hematopathology. Dr. Davis, one of the world’s experts in flow cytometry and authority in the analysis of red cells and clinical applications for red cell flow cytometry, will provide clinical expertise to the US LABS flow cytometry laboratory, read cases, interface with pathologists, and guide new test development.

According to Judd Jessup, CEO of US LABS, “We are honored to have an expert of Dr. Davis’ caliber assisting the US LABS team. The innovative approach we have taken at US LABS to deliver high-quality diagnostic test results to practicing community-based pathologists quickly and electronically has caused somewhat of a paradigm shift in cancer reference testing. In order to take our flow cytometry program to the next level, we felt strongly that a clinical thought leader in the hematopathology area was needed. Dr. Davis fills that role perfectly and, when combined with our current pathology laboratory and information technology resources, gives US LABS the intelligent developmental horsepower to further enhance these offerings.”

With more than 25 years in the field of flow cytometry and related technology, Dr. Davis was the 2004 recipient of the Wallace Coulter Award from the Clinical Cytometry Society for contributions to the field of clinical cytometry. He is the co-founder of the International Society of Laboratory Hematology and co-founder of the Journal of Laboratory Hematology. He is a past president of the Clinical Cytometry Society and, quite notably, was a principal organizer and author of the North American and International clinical flow cytometry consensus papers, which provide the basis for flow cytometry practice throughout the U.S. and Canada. He is the current chairperson for the Hematology Area Committee of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (formerly NCCLS). Dr. Davis has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles and chapters and has an even greater number of abstracts and presentations to his credit. He has been an invited speaker and participant in hundreds of national and international lectures and seminars in all areas of hematology and cytometry.

Dr. Davis stated, “I am very excited to be associated with such an innovative company as US LABS. Its Virtual FlowTM program is setting a new standard in flow cytometry, and I hope to contribute to its further evolution. Initially, I was skeptical of the concept of a “tech-only flow analysis,” but my doubts turned to excitement as I fully understood the current US LABS’ approach. The depth and completeness of the clinical information and the flexibility to electronically re-gate populations affords hematopathologists quality diagnostic results from any site with web access. The program also brings interactive flow services to local pathologists, clinicians and patients. This innovative service and others like it truly are moving medicine into the 21st century. Taking this program to the next generation with the new assets and resources available through the LabCorp acquisition made my decision to join US LABS an easy one.”

The holder of three patents, Dr. Davis is himself a significant innovator in technology for flow cytometry. In 1996 he founded Trillium Diagnostics that specializes in the development of flow cytometry-based tests. Major developments from Trillium have included Leuko64, an infection/sepsis detection assay, and Fetaltrol, a stabilized control for fetal red cell detection assays. He has served as an advisor and consultant to such companies as ABX Diagnostics, Beckman Coulter and Abbott Diagnostics. From 2002-2004, Dr. Davis was Director of Flow Cytometry Service for Genzyme Genetics. Past associations have included positions as Director of Analytical Cytometry for William Beaumont Hospital of Royal Oak, Mich., Harris Methodist Health System in Ft. Worth, Texas, and Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center of Hanover, N.H. He currently serves as Associate Director of Clinical Research for the Maine Medical Center.
